After the introduction of iOS 16 at yesterday's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple introduced landscape mode to Face ID.

Face ID will operate in landscape mode on "supported iPhone models" on "supported iPhone models," as per the change that wasn't announced on stage.

It's unknown what those limitations are at the moment; it may be as easy as "anything but the SE," or there could be drawbacks that prohibit older models with Face ID from receiving support. As the launch of iOS 16 approach, this will become evident.

Landscape mode, by the way, will operate for everything Face ID is used for, including logging on to internet sites and approving purchases.

Face ID in landscape mode is not really a new feature for iPads; it has been available for a long time, but not on iPhones.

It's worth mentioning that Apple's iOS 16 updates would not be available for all iPhones in the 6 and 7 series. iPhone 6, iPhone 6+, iPhone 6S, and iPhone 6S+ are one of the available models. The iPhone 7 and 7+ are part of the 7 series. Both of these lines would continue to operate for the rest of their lives.

Apple's 6 series was released in 2014, while the 7 series was released in 2016, so there aren't many people who own these devices. The latest version of iOS would be compatible with any device up to and including the iPhone 8.

In the meanwhile, iPads from the 5th generation or above would be compatible.
