WhatsApp sends out fresh beta releases to testers on a regular basis so they can try out new features. We've recently seen progress on features like being able to modify sent messages and having an undo option for deleted talks. Now it appears that a handful of apps are on the way that will allow us to export WhatsApp data and monitor status updates in the conversations section.
We first observed evidence in January that WhatsApp could lose its free Google backups, and that they would begin to count against your storage space at some point in the future. According to WABetaInfo, the corporation is now working on a feature that will allow users to export backed-up data saved in Google Drive. The recently released 2.22.13.11 beta begins work on an option to export WhatsApp data from Google Drive at the bottom of the backup settings page. Similarly, there should be a way to import the same data back into the system.
Meanwhile, WABetaInfo discovered a change to status updates in the 2.22.13.9 release, which is being tested. Users will be able to check for status updates directly from the chat list. To view individual or group chat updates, currently click on the "status" column adjacent to "chats." This new method of accessing them would be akin to Instagram status updates, which, like WhatsApp, is owned by Meta.
The new appearance for status updates was originally seen in a WhatsApp desktop test, and now it appears that Android will be the next platform to get it. The backup modifications are likely to have a greater impact, but we don't have a firm timeline for when either change will go live for everyone. Users of Google Drive have a 15GB free storage limit per account, and backing up WhatsApp data without the ability to cleanly export might eat up a lot of that — we're hoping for an export option soon.
